The founder's tale

Hi there! I'm Maroussia, a French girl with a lifelong love for animals. Ever since I was a child, I've felt a special connection to our furry friends. My journey as an animal lover began at the young age of nine when I rescued my first kittens. This profound experience ignited a passion that has only grown stronger over the years. My journey led me to the Netherland, where I spent ten wonderful years. During my time in Amsterdam, I had the opportunity to work for IDEXX, a leading veterinary technology company. My role allowed me to delve into the fascinating fields of hematology and biochemistry as they relate to veterinary analysis. I gained valuable insights into how veterinary analysers operate and the importance of accurate testing in animal health care. This experience was incredibly meaningful, as it not only enhanced my technical knowledge but also deepened my appreciation for the vital role that veterinary professionals play in ensuring the well-being of animals. In December 2020, I embarked on an exciting adventure to Zanzibar for the very first time. After witnessing the difficult life conditions of stray dogs and cats on the island, I made the decision to register a non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing, providing care, and rehoming these vulnerable animals. Our mission is simple yet profound: to offer love, medical treatment, and a safe haven for stray animals in need. With countless strays living on the streets, facing hunger, illness, and neglect, our organization aims to make a tangible difference in their lives. Through my experiences, I have developed a strong determination to raise awareness about animal welfare and the importance of kindness in our interactions with them. My goal is to be a voice for those who cannot speak for themselves and fight against animal suffering.

Thank you for taking the time to learn a little about me.

Beyond rescue: health mission

Our commitment extends beyond immediate rescue. We actively run spay and neuter campaigns, coupled with rabies vaccination programs, to reduce the stray population responsibly and promote public health.

Zanzibar culture & colour

Zanzibar Island, also known as Unguja, is a beautiful Tanzanian island renowned for its stunning white-sand beaches, vibrant coral reefs, and historic Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It offers a blend of rich cultural heritage, diverse marine life, and lush spice plantations, making it a popular destination for travellers seeking relaxation, adventure, and cultural exploration. Zanzibar  has a rich Muslim influence that shapes its culture, traditions, and architecture. Islam was introduced in the 9th century through Arab traders, and today it remains the dominant religion, influencing daily life, festivals, and social norms. The island's culture is a blend of Swahili, Arab, Persian, Indian, and European elements, evident in its vibrant music, dance, cuisine, and historic sites.

Life for stray dogs and cats in Zanzibar is often very challenging due to limited access to food, clean water, shelter, and veterinary care. These animals are vulnerable to harsh weather conditions, disease, and injuries, and they frequently face threats from humans, such as violence or neglect leading to high mortality rates among the stray population. Efforts by local organizations and volunteers are crucial in improving their lives.

In Swahili-speaking communities, the term is often used to express affection and admiration, highlighting the celestial qualities associated with angels. Whether in literature, music, or everyday conversation, Malaika evokes a sense of hope and inspiration, resonating deeply with those familiar with its meaning. In essence, calling someone "Malaika" is a way of acknowledging their angelic presence in your life, celebrating the light and love they bring.
